When Required

When is an Excavator Lift Plan Required?

The need for an excavator lift plan depends on the complexity and level of risk associated with the lifting operation. While some simple routine lifts may be carried out using established procedures, many construction lifting operations require a lift plan prepared by a competent Appointed Person.

Planning Factors to Consider

The level of planning should always be proportionate to the risks involved. Factors such as the following should all be considered during the planning process:

Typical operations requiring an excavator lift plan:

Loading and unloading heavy plant or equipment

A lift plan should be considered whenever an excavator is used to lift suspended loads, particularly where there are significant hazards or where failure could result in serious injury or damage.

Compliance

Excavator Lifting Regulations

Lifting operations using excavators are governed by several pieces of UK legislation and recognised industry guidance. Compliance with these requirements helps ensure lifting operations are properly planned, supervised and carried out safely.

Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 19...

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) require every lifting operation involving work equipment to be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out in a safe manner.

Lifting accessories such as chains, webbing slings, shackles and lifting eyes must be suitable for the intended load, thoroughly examined where required, and used within their rated capacities.
